The Detroit Diesel 23514708 is a genuine OEM coolant temperature sensor (CTS) designed for Detroit Series 60 and Series 50 diesel engines. This critical sensor is mounted on the right rear corner of the cylinder head, behind the turbocharger, where it monitors engine coolant temperature and sends an electrical signal to the DDEC (Detroit Diesel Electronic Control) module. The ECM uses this data to optimize fuel injection timing, manage engine protection systems, control the cooling fan, and ensure proper cold start enrichment for reliable performance across all operating conditions.

How the Coolant Temperature Sensor Works

The coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor (temperature-sensitive resistor) that changes electrical resistance based on coolant temperature. As coolant temperature increases, the sensor's resistance decreases, which changes the voltage signal sent to the DDEC ECM. The ECM uses this information to:

  • Adjust Fuel Injection: Provides fuel enrichment during cold starts and optimizes timing as the engine warms up
  • Control Cooling Fan: Engages and disengages the engine cooling fan based on temperature thresholds
  • Manage Engine Protection: Triggers warnings, derates, or shutdown if coolant temperature exceeds safe limits
  • Optimize Performance: Fine-tunes injection timing and duration for current operating temperature

Sensor Location

The coolant temperature sensor on Detroit Series 60 engines is located on the right rear corner of the cylinder head, behind the turbocharger. Access may require removal of some intake or exhaust components depending on the specific vehicle installation.

Installation Notes

  • Drain coolant below sensor level before removal
  • Disconnect electrical connector before removing sensor
  • Clean threads in cylinder head before installing new sensor
  • Apply thread sealant approved for coolant system use
  • Torque new sensor to specification – do not overtighten
  • Refill coolant and bleed air from system
  • Clear any fault codes with DDEC diagnostic reader
  • Verify proper temperature readings after warm-up cycle

Pigtail Connector

If your wiring harness connector is damaged or corroded, the compatible pigtail connector is part number W094104. This allows repair of the harness without full replacement.

Verify your engine serial number and DDEC version before ordering to confirm fitment. Series 60 engines with different DDEC versions may use different sensor configurations.

Returns
All Pro Truck Parts offers lifetime returns for any reason on NEW, UNOPENED items in the original packaging with exceptions. (See sale items and special order items).
To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging.

Used items (if applicable)
Items marked as USED at the time of sale will be accepted for return up to 30 days from the date of sale. 


Defective items (if applicable)
Defective items under manufacturer warranty will be eligible for return, as well as a full refund for the total amount paid by the customer. The following criteria must be met to be eligible. (a). The part is under manufacturer warranty (b). the manufacturer has determined the part defective for the purchased application. 


Refunds (if applicable)
Once your item is returned and received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund.
If approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within 7 business days. For order placed by phone through a card terminal, you must call in to initiate the refund. 

Late or missing refunds (if applicable)
If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank account again.
Then contact your credit card company, it may take some time before your refund is officially posted.
Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted.

Only regular priced items may be refunded, unfortunately sale items cannot be refunded.

If you are shipping an item over $75, it is advised that you use a trackable shipping service or purchasing shipping insurance. We don’t guarantee that we will receive your returned item.
For returned items designated as "Free Shipping", any items shipped to the customer in which the customer did not pay shipping. All Pro Truck Parts will recover the cost of shipping to the customer's address from the refundable amount owed to the customer on the return and inspection of the item.
